The Municipality of Chester is committed to providing quality services and programs to all, not just some. We believe in equity, diversity, inclusion and dignity and will work towards eliminating barriers where we can, both within our organization and in our communities.

This site will focus primarily on our equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) efforts, but will also extend to the work we are doing in accessibility. Below are the structures we have put in place to carry out this work.

  • We have partnered with the rest of the municipal units in Lunenburg County to establish and implement a regional accessibility plan. Each unit, including ours, will be audited and individual plans developed. We have completed our audit and developed a good portion of our plan.
  • In 2021, Municipal Council approved the formation of an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee to provide advice and support. Committee members were selected (six community members and two Councillors) and the first meeting was held in January 2022.
  • Through that Committee's work, an EDI Action Plan was approved by Council in March of 2023. The Committee reviewed and advised on numerous efforts in that Plan and, in 2025, put forward an updated Action Plan for approval and submission to the Province. That Plan is in place until 2028.
  • While the Committee disbanded in 2026, the Municipality will continue to seek first-voice input when implementing its Action Plan.
  • Council entered into an agreement with the other municipal units in Lunenburg County to bridge boundary divides and take a regional approach. A Draft Anti-Racism Action Plan was created as a basis for future actions.
